AutoSave will be enabled by default in Office 365 – be careful!!

What’s changing?

AutoSave (the feature which automatically saves your work at internals) will be enabled by default in the upcoming semi-annual release of Office.  This means that it will be happening whether you choose it or not, unless you specifically turn it off.  And that’s not necessarily simple to do.

How does this help me?

According to Microsoft:
“This change means that for documents stored in OneDrive for Business or SharePoint Online, you will not have to worry about losing your changes. Changes will be stored in the cloud automatically, and you will no longer have to explicitly press Ctrl + S or the Save button.”

Are there any down sides?

Yes, there are!  The downside is that it is possible to accidentally make changes to documents, for example, if you are working with template documents, performing hypothetical changes to spreadsheets, or reading a finalized document.  In these cases, you don’t want to make changes, but anything you do, WILL be automatically saved as a change to the document.  So you need to be very vigilant, and may need to manually turn AutoSave off.

Can I turn AutoSave off?

You can turn AutoSave off, but you have to do it manually for each file.  To turn it off, you simply click the autosave toggle at the top of the document.  This will be remembered each time you open the file.  However, AutoSave will remain on in all other files, unless you make the change there too.  It is not possible to turn AutoSave off globally unless you are the administrator.

When is this happening?

This change will apply in the upcoming Semi-Annual Channel release in late September and will initially apply to Targeted Release organizations, then it will become available in the Semi-Annual Channel release in January 2019 for all Office 365 organizations.
