Windows 11 gives CCTV problems!

If you use CCTV, you need to be aware of this before upgrading to Windows 11….read on…

How is CCTV footage been viewed remotely?

To view CCVT footage remotely, most systems have been using Internet Explorer, a web browser developed by Microsoft.  The reason for this is that Internet Explorer has been the only browser to support the plug-in required for the systems to have full functionality.

Microsoft released a blog on 15th June 2022 saying “After 25+ years of helping people use and experience the web, Internet Explorer (IE) is officially retired and out of support as of today, June 15, 2022. To many millions of you, thank you for using Internet Explorer as your gateway to the internet”.

Windows now recommends the use of the newer browser “Edge”.

On Windows 11, Edge is the default browser, and Internet Explorer is not available at all (well, not officially, or easily – there are work-arounds).  Which is a bit of a problem if you have a CCTV system that needs Internet Explorer for you to be able to view footage online…

However, recognising the problems that this would cause for users of many products, Microsoft added “Microsoft Edge is a faster, more secure and modern browser—the best browser for Windows—designed for today’s internet. But we haven’t forgotten that some parts of the web still rely on Internet Explorer’s specific behaviors and features, which is why Microsoft Edge comes with Internet Explorer mode (IE mode)”.

Ah!  Internet Explorer mode within a different browser!  So how does that work?

Unfortunately this is only a short-term fix, which will need repeating.

The only real long-term answer may be to replace your CCTV system.  So it really is worth thinking hard before upgrading to Windows 11, if this is you.  However, Windows 10 will reach its end of support date on October 14, 2025, so you can’t put it off forever.
