Fun facts about email

Did you know…

Email was invented in 1971 by Ray Tomlinson.  Ray worked as a computer programmer for a research and design company.  He invented a messaging system for easy, internal company communication.  His mailing system worked across the ARPANET (a forerunner to the internet we now have).  It was Ray Tomlinson who introduced the @ symbol to determine where the message was to go.

Well, you know now!

And here are some more email-related gems for you:

  1. An entry in the 1971 Guinness World Records marks the invention of email that year.
  2. There are now over 5.5 billion email accounts in existence!
  3. Almost 2.7 million emails are sent every second.
  4. About half of your inbox is spam (well, unless you use a spam filter – ask us for more information!)
  5. Email addresses are not case-sensitive, meaning that you can type them in UPPER or lower case, and it MAKES no DIFFERENCE!
  6. In 1991 the first email was sent from SPACE!  The STS-43 Atlantis crew used AppleLink software to send the message, which read “Hasta la vista baby…we’ll be back!”

  10. POP3 or IMAP?  These are different email protocols.  POP3 downloads the email from a server to the local computer and then deletes the email from the server.  IMAP stores the message on a server and synchronizes the message across multiple devices.
