Windows 11
Windows 11 – the latest version of the Microsoft Windows operating system, was released on October 5th 2021 .
If you are currently running Windows 10 on an eligible device, you can upgrade free-of-charge to Windows 11.
The main difference is a new user interface, which is more mac-like in feel, with nice rounded edges. The start menu is in the centre of the screen (by default anyway, you can change this if you like). The app distribution is improved, and security is enhanced too.
But should you hurry to go for the upgrade?
Shall I upgrade now?
We think not.
With all new software versions and upgrades, it’s common to have some glitches. We prefer to wait until these have been spotted and ironed out, before taking the leap ourselves. And we recommend doing the same. The last thing anyone needs is to have loads of hiccoughs and headaches, that won’t be there in a few weeks’ time. If Windows 10 is running fine for you, why not let other people discover the problems, and give time for Microsoft to put them right, before going for it yourself?
What problems might I encounter?
Several teething problems have already been reported with Windows 11, including WiFi problems, and compatibility issues with certain processors. Another well-documented problem is that in Windows 11, File Explorer leaks memory. In other words, a lot of RAM resources are used, slowing down your computer.
Microsoft knows that there will be issues for some people, and is planning to roll Windows 11 out gradually, in phases. Officially, Microsoft has said that it’s expecting all eligible PCs to receive the update by mid-2022.
So when should I upgrade to Windows 11?
There’s absolutely no rush – Microsoft will be supporting Windows 10 until October 2025, another four years away.
It’s probably best to wait until 2022 before upgrading.
Anything else I need to know?
In a change from Windows 10, Microsoft will now only be updating Windows 11 once a year. This offers Microsoft more time to apply fixes, add new features, and test new versions before release, hopefully meaning that upgrades are more reliable.
