How to keep your data safe
Whether you’re still working from home, are back in the office, never left the office, or do a mixture of both, there are a few simple things we can all do to keep our company data safe.
Having a secure device to work on is crucial.
Follow these 5 simple tips to secure your devices and protect your data.
1 New app? Check it first…
Any piece of software installed on your ‘phone, tablet or computer could be malicious, and loaded with dangerous software that could compromise your data. Don’t click on the link to download a new app without thinking first. Or even checking with your IT department before installing it…
2 Working? Use your work device
It might sound simple, but keep your work and personal devices separate. If you HAVE to use your personal device for work, consider creating a separate user account with an unique username and password.
3 Using your home internet? Secure it
In the office, your network will need to be secure – IT will sort that out. If you’re working from home, secure your internet connection by using a complex password on your router. Better still, if your organisation offers it, use a VPN (virtual private network).
4 Authorised personnel only in all areas!
If you work for a larger organisation, or in a multi-tenant office space, there is an increased risk of people you don’t recognise physically entering the building. Don’t let anyone follow you in through a locked door – if they are genuine they should have their own key or fob; if they are a visitor they should buzz through for the person they are visiting to let them in. If you do let someone in, escort them to the person they have come to visit.
5 Even at home!
Even at home, it’s a good idea to make sure that your screen can’t be viewed through a window, for instance, or via your kids’ gaming computer video feed. And always lock your computer when you step away from it.
Don’t kick yourself later – it’s always best to be careful. If you are unsure about any aspect of computer security in the office or at home, give us a call at datamills on 0114 287 0510 for advice.
