Cyber Security is something that we all know is important.
But it can seem overwhelming. Where do you start? What does all the tech-speak mean? How long will it take? And how much will it cost?
The UK government’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has released a short (16 page) guide specifically for small businesses to help them deal with cyber security. Brilliant for the busy business owner, the guide gives advice which is:
Affordable and practical
Broken down into 5 quick and easy steps
The NCSC says “Cyber security needn’t be a daunting challenge for small business owners. Following the five quick and easy steps outlined in the guide below could save time, money and even your business’ reputation”. They add, “This guide can’t guarantee protection from all types of cyber attack, but the steps outlined below can significantly reduce the chances of your business becoming a victim of cyber crime”.
The 5 areas covered by the guide are:
- Backing up your data
- Protecting your organisation from malware
- Keeping your smartphones and tablets safe
- Using passwords to protect your data
- Avoiding phishing attacks
The guide has been welcomed by organisations supporting businesses in our area. Supt. Rebecca Chapman, director of the North East Business Resilience Centre (NEBRC) said, “At a time when many businesses face an increased risk of cyber-attack while working from home this updated report aptly addresses current cyber situations and new types of security threats”.
