Beware – fake login pages

Your login details provide access to your shopping and bank accounts…

They give access to confidential client information and other important business data…

In other words, they are gold dust!

And as such, they are worth fraudsters getting hold of.

One clever way they can get hold of your login information is to get you to go to a cleverly crafted FAKE login page, that looks just like the real thing.  When you, unsuspectingly, enter your login details to this fake login page, the criminal simply collects them.

Once your login details are in the wrong hands, they can be used to defraud you of money, leak confidential information that damages your company’s reputation (and can cost heavily in fines), or sell them to the highest bidder…

How to spot a fake login page

If you type in the URL (address) for the website you want to log in to, then you know you’re going to the right place.

But if you click on a link in an email, that’s where the danger lies…

The (phishing) email will look genuine, with the usual corporate logos etc, and so will the page you’re directed to.

But, things to check include:

  • look in the address bar.  Does the address start with https://
  • still in the address bar – is the domain name correct, or slightly different?
  • check spelling and grammar – a lot of mistakes can be a sign that the page isn’t genuine.

If the email is about something that you really want to respond to, and it seems genuine,  contact the company by another method, rather than by clicking on the link in the email.  But beware an offer that seems to good to be true… you know what they say…
