Trickbot – get informed and keep your business safe!
A Trickbot is a type of malware. Malware, as you will know, is a piece of software specifically designed to cause damage to a computer or network. To be precise, a Trickbot is trojan-type malware. The name trojan comes from the ancient Greek story of the large wooden horse presented as a “gift” to the city of Troy, but in fact the means to smuggle soldiers into the city. In a similar way, trojan malware (also called a trojan virus) is hidden in what appears to be a normal file.
The trick that Trickbot plays is to steal your private information, such as bank details and passwords.
It pays to be well informed (and protected!) against nasties like Trickbot.
This is why the NCSC (National Cyber Security Centre) have recently released a new advisory article.
So, what can you do to protect your business?
5 steps to seriously reduce your risk of falling prey to Trickbot:
- Run a full scan with a reputable, up-to-date anti-virus scanner. Then keep anti-virus software running on your system.
- Keep your operating system and all software up-to-date with patches and updates as they become available. This way you are benefitting from new security as soon as it is released.
- Make sure you have backups (including off-line) in case the worst should happen.
- Use multi-factor authentication where you can – it gives you an extra layer of protection.
- Have procedures so that your staff know who will be in contact for bank details / to request transfers etc (and would not fall for an unexpected communication).
