Google Cloud Print ending

Google Cloud Print ending

Google Cloud Print is a service that connects your home and work printers to the web.

This means that you can print from applications (web, desktop and mobile) on any device in the network cloud.

In other words, if you’re out and about, you can send something to the office printer to be printed out.  You don’t need to wait until you’re next in the office yourself.  The staff there can post out the form (or whatever else it is) the same day!

What’s good about Google Cloud Print?

Google Cloud Print is known for being brand-independent and for working with legacy printers as well as newer ones.

The benefits are many, and the downsides few (unless the internet goes down).

But sadly, all this is to come to an end.  In November 2019, Google announced that Cloud Print will no longer be supported after 31st December 2020.  Despite being around since 2010, the Google Cloud Print never progressed beyond a beta version.  Now it’s not needed any more for printing from Chrome OS, Google are doing away with it altogether.

Google suggest “We recommend that over the next year, you identify an alternative solution and execute a migration strategy”.  Ouch!

So where do you start?

What do I do now Google Cloud Print is ending?

Google recommends either using the native printing infrastructure of the operating system/s your device/s uses, or partnering with a print solutions provider.
