Try this brief experiment:
Switch your computer off, and sit down to do a day’s work.
How far did you get without your computer?
Some things you could possibly find in other places. But the chances are there are some (maybe many) things that you simply can’t do without your computer. It’s all on there!
So, if the worst happened, and:
- A nasty virus took hold of your computer and denied you access to all your files
- Your laptop was dropped and wouldn’t boot up any more
- A power-surge during a thunderstorm caused damage to your computer
- An employee accidentally deleted a crucial file
- You spilt coffee on your machine
etc. You get the idea. You’d be left in the same situation as you are now in your experiment – trying to work without your computer. And if, like most people, you don’t think you’d be able to carry on without it, you NEED to make sure that you have backups in place.
You need to make sure you have backups in place
If you have backups, should the worst happen, you’d be able to recover most of your information and carry on. A data backup regime is a must according to “The Balance Small Business”.
Where data is concerned, a backup can save your business.
The 3-2-1 rule of backups
A good rule of thumb for adequate backing up is the 3-2-1 rule. This states that you should keep 3 copies of your data on 2 different pieces of media, 1 of which should be off-site.
This guards against something like a fire in your business premises destroying all your copies. It also allows for physical failure of one of the copies due to damaged hardware.
Where do I start?
If you know that you don’t have backups in place for your crucial business data, or you’re not sure, don’t delay. Act now. Make a plan about how to back up, and get started. Now!
