When do you need to securely erase data?
- If you are getting rid of an old computer, phone, or storage device of any kind (pen drive, external HDD…)
- If you are recycling or swapping out any of these things.
- If your data is personal, financial, or business data (in other words, anything that could be used against you, or that you’d be uncomfortable with anyone else having access to).
Why simply deleting files isn’t enough
Deleting everything does not erase the data from a hard drive. And it’s not rocket science for this data to be recovered.
Now, this can be very good news, if you’ve accidentally deleted something you still need!
However, if you really want it gone, for instance if your computer is being disposed of (when you get your lovely new one!), then you need your personal, financial and business critical data gone, GONE. Just deleting the files is not enough.
The next step up is to format the drive. But even formatting does not [always] actually erase the data from a hard drive.
So how do you make sure it’s really gone?
What you need to do is to WIPE the data completely from the hard drive. The way to do this varies from device to device, and depending on the type of drive used. Methods fall into one of three categories:
- Data destruction software (free versions exist)
- Use a Degausser (magnetically damages the drive, rendering it unusable)
- Physically damage it (therapeutic session with a hammer?!) (drill holes in it?!) (some people even shoot holes in them, but we didn’t think it would be responsible to include links to videos of shooting – search youtube yourself if you’re interested!)
Some data destruction companies provide a free service, so it’s worth contacting them to see what they offer.
Datamills (UK) Ltd can also take care of securely erasing your data, so if you want further information, give us a call any time to discuss what you need.
