Support for Windows 7 is ending

Support for Windows 7 is ending soon.

After 14th January 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or support for PCs running Windows 7.

That’s less than a year away.

What does this mean to me?

Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 7 on January 13, 2015, but extended support won’t end until January 14, 2020. However, after this date, there will be no support at all for Windows 7.  This means that Windows 7 systems will be more vulnerable to security risks, such as viruses. There will be no further feature updates.   And no support will be available for any problems encountered with Windows 7.

What should I do?

To keep secure and supported after this date, you can move to Windows 10.  Compatible Windows 7 PCs can be upgraded to Windows 10 with a full license.  Alternatively, to take advantage of the latest hardware capabilities, you could move to a new PC with Windows 10.  This might be the most advisable course of action.

Can I upgrade free of charge?

Microsoft 365 Business comes with a free upgrade for users with a Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 Pro license on their device.  By purchasing Microsoft 365 Business, your users can upgrade all of their old Windows Pro licensed devices at no additional cost.

Does this apply to Windows Embedded 7?

There are a number of members of the Windows Embedded 7 product family with different support lifecycles.  The earliest end of support date is 14th January 2020 and the others follow thereafter.  The more details, see Microsoft’s product lifecycle page.
