Fake virus alerts
We’ve had numerous calls recently from customers who have had a virus warning suddenly appearing on their computer screen. The pop up warning states that a virus has been detected on your computer. It usually adds “call for support” and includes a number for you to call. The warning seems to be from Microsoft, but it isn’t – don’t call the number. It’s a scam, designed to trick you into paying for a “solution”.
What to do if you get one
The first thing is not to call the number. And don’t click on any links. Even if the message threatens that your information (passwords, banking data etc) is at risk, don’t fall for it. The message in itself isn’t likely to cause any harm. The hacker is relying on you responding to the message.
If you are worried, or need help removing the message, call your IT provider. If you don’t have IT support in place, why not give us a call at datamills to find out how we can support you? We offer a free consultation.
How can I stop this happening?
Nothing is 100% effective in stopping all malicious activity, but the following will definitely put you in the best place:
Keep all software on your computer up to date, including your web browser. Many will automatically install updates as they become available. It’s worth checking this.
If you are using an old browser, that is no longer supported (such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 10), this won’t be possible. Security updates are not being produced for it any more. In this case, you may be wise to consider changing to a newer browser for which you can receive up-to-date security patches.
Make sure you have anti-malware software running on all your machines, and that this is kept up-to-date too.
If you’ve seen a fake alert like this one, it’s worth letting your IT provider know, so that they can check that it’s been removed properly. Call us if you have any further questions.
