A new Windows 10 update has arrived. It was billed to be called the “Spring Creator’s Update”, but has actually appeared named simply “Windows 10 April 2018 Update”. It became available to download from 30th April 2018, and began rolling out via “Windows Update” from 8th May. This means that it will, in time, automatically update Windows 10 on your machine (if it hasn’t already).
What can you expect from the Windows 10 April 2018 Update?
Timeline – “Task View” now shows a history of previous files, apps and websites visited, enabling you to continue with what you were doing earlier.
Nearby Sharing – sharing files and URLs between PCs using Bluetooth is now much easier.
Swift Pair – connecting two devices by Bluetooth is easier than before.
Fluent design – the look and feel of Windows 10 continues to advance.
Better privacy – Windows Diagnostic Data Viewer lets you see the data collected from your PC and sent to Microsoft.
Fewer distractions – with “Focus Assist”, which allows you to control which notifications sound when.
Better Microsoft store – many new, more progressive apps will be available.
Improvements to Edge – the browser is getting better.
More – see other features.
Can I upgrade now, or delay upgrading?
If you’re running Windows 10, but haven’t seen the update on your machines yet, you can force the upgrade. Microsoft has indicated that going to Settings -> Update & security -> Windows Update and clicking on the button Check for updates should trigger the April 2018 Update to begin downloading on most machines, providing you are using “an actively serviced version of Windows 10”.
If you’d rather delay the update as long as possible, see this article by TechRepublic for details.
