Everyone’s talking about GDPR!

GDPR – General Data Protection Regulations – the new law coming into force in May 2018 – is starting to loom closer, and if you haven’t started to think about how your company needs to prepare, now’s the time!

The emphasis for data protection is moving towards personal choice and freedom, with a lot more power to the individual to choose how their information is kept and what it’s used for.  This means that simply trawling through a list of business cards you picked up at that meeting 2 years ago, or calling a customer you haven’t heard from for a while, may no longer be allowable without specific permission.  It is worth checking that you know what impact this may have on the way your business works.  You’ll need to put any changes in place by May, and be able to show that you’re adhering to best practice.  For more information, check out the Information Commissioner’s Office website.

If you’d rather have someone else read through all that, and explain it to you: Our MD, Andrew Mills, has been raising awareness of the new GDPR for a few months now, with talks at Digital Cafe and elsewhere.  Some of these have been in conjunction with local solicitor, Toby Pochron, of IronMonger Curtis.

A few of the events are tailored to particular professions, and their next event is fully booked already!  However, if you’d benefit from hearing more, don’t worry – more events are coming up in the new year.

The first one is a Digital Cafe event on Thursday 25th January at Abbeydale Sports Club.  Starting at 10am, and lasting just an hour and a half, with good coffee too, this is the ideal way to hear an overview of what is expected to happen with GDPR, and to be able to ask questions of both legal and technical experts.   Click here to book your place.

Further events will be coming up after that, including one on 22nd February, where Andrew and Toby will be joining forces with Natwest Bank, WorldPay, South Yorkshire Police Fraud department and others.  More details to follow…
