When Microsoft launched Windows 10, they initially offered free upgrades to the new operating system. So if you have an earlier version of Windows, you can currently upgrade free-of-charge to Windows 10. That, however, is about to come to an end.
Free Upgrade Ending
Microsoft says “If you use assistive technologies, you can upgrade to Windows 10 at no cost as Microsoft continues our efforts to improve the Windows 10 experience for people who use these technologies. Please take advantage of this offer before it expires on December 31, 2017”.
So, after the end of the year, it will cost you to upgrade to Windows 10. UK pricing is currently £119 for Windows 10 Home or £219.99 for Windows 10 Pro. Per machine!
Sometimes people are cautious when a new version of any software first appears. They don’t want to be the ones to experience any teething problems that may occur. However, Windows 10 has been around for almost 2 and a half years now, giving time for early problems to be spotted and fixed. And with the significant cost increase associated with upgrading after the end of December, it may be that now is the time to go for it, if you haven’t already.
Why Upgrade to Windows 10 anyway?
You may wonder why it’s necessary to upgrade to Windows 10. What’s wrong with your current version of Windows? It seems to be working fine, and do everything you want it to do. Well, the most pressing reason is that older versions eventually stop being supported by Microsoft. And unsupported means no more security patches, which means that your IT system is at a significantly higher risk from viruses and other internet attacks. The other reason is that other software is updated to work with the latest versions of operating systems, so you may start to encounter problems running your other applications if you stay on an old operating system too long.
