Why backup MS Office 365?
“Once I’m in the cloud I’m safe. Microsoft guarantees the fidelity of my data and ensures that I always have a backup should I need to restore content or if there is a catastrophic failure in their system. Because of this, I don’t need to worry about backing up my content.”
Not 100% true – don’t fall into the trap of thinking this. You still need to backup your data. This is because Office 365 data is still vulnerable to human actions such as:
- accidental file deletion – it happens! (see case study below)
- malicious file deletion – employees, ex-employees, or outsiders managing to gain unauthorised access to your system..
There are additional benefits of having a third-party backup system in place, such as archiving possibilities.
Case Study
A client recently approached us for data recovery. He brought with him a hard disk drive, which was the only copy left of his company data. What had happened was simply that he had removed a user from Office 365, when a member of staff left the business. However, this user’s business OneDrive held all the company data, which was shared with the other member of staff. For 30 days nothing changed, but then, as per Microsoft policy, all the data for the terminated subscription was removed and not recoverable.
