Moving office? How to move the IT across smoothly…

Soon to move to that new office?  Finally!  After struggling in too little space for too long!  Great new location, maybe, with better parking?  Far more professional impression for your customers…  It’s going to be wonderful!

But then the niggles and practicalities of the move start to happen, not least with moving your computers, ‘phone line, internet connection etc.

Here are a few tips to consider to make sure it all goes well:

  1. Internet.  Inform your internet provider as soon as possible.  Make sure that the data connection speed will be adequate at the new site (faster, or at least the same as you currently have).  Do not just assume that this will be the case – it is not always.  Any new line needed could take 1-3 months to put in, and may be very expensive to do.
  2. Telephones.  Inform your telephone provider as soon as possible (long lead times apply again if you need to install new lines.  If the new office is not in the same exchange area as your current office, it may not be possible to keep the same numbers, which could mean forwarding or other solutions become necessary.
  3. Server.  Make sure that you have a large enough dedicated space in the new office, with sufficient power and cooling.  Consider security.
  4. DNS.  To keep your website and emails running smoothly through the move, this will need to be correct.
  5. Computers on desks!  Think ahead about where everybody will sit, and make sure that each desk has the correct number of power, telephone and network points available.
